Emily Wardill

Exhibition at Kohta Art Space

Emily Wardill (England, 1977, lives in Lisbon) is a well known mid-career artist usually working with film and video but also with objects and installation. She has a long-standing interest in the psychic, in mind-alteration and expended consciousness and in how spaces (both three-dimensional and mental ones) may become charged with psychic energy and occult meaning.

For her exhibition at Kohta, Wardill is starting a new work based on the history of Portugal after the 1974 revolution, mirrored through a set of characters that make up a family, and embodied by the interior of the house that the architect António Teixeira Guerra built for himself and his family outside Lisbon in the mid-1970s.

This work is still in progress, but it will involve a video projection and an installation with voices of disembodied family characters. Wardill’s exhibition marks the continuation of Kohta’s ambition to show cutting-edge moving-image work by contemporary artists of all active generations.
