Thomas Nyqvist

Exhibition at Kohta Art Space

Thomas Nyqvist (Finland, 1955, lives in Helsinki) is known as a painter, perhaps even as a painters’ painter, but his large and small canvases are almost always based on his own photographs of built environments in radical decay or transition – of building or demolition sites.

In this exhibition Nyqvist will, for the first time, show a selection of these photographs alongside new and existing paintings. The intention is to demonstrate how classical painting may still serve as a source of inspiration for an artist today, even – indeed particularly – when connected to the changes that the 21st-century urban environment is steadily undergoing.

Nyqvist is a founding member of the Kohta Council. It is part of our programming to feature at least one of the five artists in the council every year. The first of these exhibition was ‘Martti Aiha: Omakuva’ in the early autumn of 2018, and in the spring of 2020 Nina Roos will show new work.
